San Bernardino County Sheriff addresses threats against “unspecified targets” in California

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement posted to social media on Wednesday (March 12) that they are investigating a potential act of war against unspecified targets in California.

The Department said that “the Federal Bureau of Investigation shared with law enforcement agencies across California regarding a potential threat involving Iran.” The Sheriff’s Department said that as of Wednesday, no threats have been officially verified.

ABC News reviewed the memorandum issued by the FBI. They quoted it as saying, “We recently acquired information that as of early February 2026, Iran allegedly aspired to conduct a surprise attack using unmanned aerial vehicles from an unidentified vessel off the coast of the United State Homeland, specifically against unspecified targets in California, in the event that the US conducted strikes against Iran. We have no additional information on the timing, method, target, or perpetrators of this alleged attack.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, California Governor Gavin Newsom said, “While we are not aware of any imminent threats at this time, we remain prepared for any emergency in our state.”

In Wednesday’s statement, the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department say that they have increased patrols out of an abundance of caution and continue to work closely with local, state, and federal law partners to monitor and identify potential threats. The ask that if any hi-desert residents see anything suspicious, that they immediately report it.
