San Bernardino BOS limits remote attendance in Joshua Tree for future meetings

A notice taped to the entrance of the County’s Bob Burke Government Center in Joshua Tree announced, “… this site is no longer available as a location to provide in person comments to the board.” And so ended a 10-year-run as a space where the public could participate remotely in the board of supervisors meetings without having to travel to the county seat in San Bernardino.

The above notice was posted at the entrance to the Bob Burke Government Center shortly before the last meeting of the County Board of Supervisors.

The good news is that the location will again operate as a local site where the public can comment to county supervisors, but instead of setting up the remote video feed every time the board meets, it will be set only when there is an item on the board agenda that is anticipated to draw significant local public participation.

The reason for the change is two fold:

  • Public use at the site has been inconsistent and in recent years it has diminished significantly.
  • The room doubles as an employee break room which is required by law.

Usage of the room as a remote site for every meeting too often prevented employees from being able to use this space in accordance with the law.

What hasn’t changed is that the public may still provide comments to County Supervisors via email or U.S. Mail:
