Pickleball is coming to Yucca Valley

A tennis court at Jacob’s Park in Yucca Valley is being temporarily converted into pickleball courts following a recommendation from the Yucca Valley Park, Recreation and Cultural Commission. The Yucca Valley Town Council says that the conversion will allow them to meet demand for the courts in a timely and cost-effective manner.

Pickleball has been gaining popularity in the last few years, especially with older folks. The nascent sport initially gained popularity in the Pacific Northwest and has been steadily growing since 1965 as a singles or team sport with a short learning curve and low equipment costs. A pickleball court is also roughly 1/3rd the size of a tennis court – which is how the Town Council is able to squeeze 4 pickleball courts – complete with nets and striping – into a single tennis court’s footprint.

The Town Council says that the conversion will happen within the next two months during a planned resurfacing of the remaining tennis courts – and will work with community tennis organizations to balance the availability of the remaining tennis courts for both organized and open activities.
