Pejman Elahi Trial heads toward verdict as prosecution and defense rest

Listen here:

Prosecuting Attorney Heather Razook recalled law enforcement testimony on Tuesday morning. Detective Halloway of the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department was back on the stand clarifying the photo lineup that he showed to the victim to help identify Pejman Elahi as the suspected shooter in the November 9th incident.

Firefighter and Paramedic Nicolas Vasquez also took the stand for the prosecution – describing the scene when he arrived at Brianna Schan’s residence – the scene where the two men met before driving into a dirt field to fight. Vasquez described the victim’s gunshot wounds on his arm and legs – including one gunshot wound in the victim’s upper thigh which had no exit, leading Vasquez to opt for flying the victim via helicopter to the nearest Trauma Center at Palm Springs Desert Regional.

The trial continued with testimony from the neighbor who called 911 after hearing the victim’s screams for help on that day.

“Desperate Screaming for Help”

The neighbor described the morning she found the victim Gerald Jonas with 3 gunshot wounds on the property of Brianna Schan. At first the yelling wasn’t a concern as “we do get some interesting characters in the neighborhood”. When the yelling turned into  a “desperate screaming for help,” the neighbor scrambled over the neighbor’s fence to find Jonas bleeding on the patio of Schan’s residence.. She described quote “a good bit of blood” and the victim thrashing and screaming. The neighbor immediately called 911 and the courtroom listened to a recording of the call.

In it you can hear the neighbor trying to calm the distraught Jonas – who was described as screaming and thrashing around. The good samaritan stayed with Jonas as deputies and paramedics arrived, despite not knowing the circumstances of the shooting or even where the shooter was. In the call, Gerald Jonas answers both the neighbor and the responding officers’ question of “who shot you” with the answer “Chuckie” – or “Brianna’s new boyfriend Chuckie.”

The final testimony came from Deputy Alexander Stumbo, who was one of the first law enforcement on the scene.

Prosecution rests; Defense followed suit immediately after

He confirmed that the name “Chuckie” was used to identify the suspected shooter, which is a known nickname for Pejman Elahi. On recross, Defense Attorney John-Paul Serrao made sure it was clear that according to testimonies, no physical description of Elahi was given by the victim other than being described a “hispanic adult male” with a “gang of tattoos on his face.”

With that testimony, Prosecution and Defense rested without the Defense calling any witnesses to the stand – most notably Pejman Elahi himself.

The case is being presented to the Jury this morning for their deliberation and eventual verdict.
