Substantial confusion and further questions were raised after last Saturday’s Yucca Valley town hall, where Representative Jay Obernolte commented on the controversial communications tower project proposed for Morongo Valley.
After Obernolte’s claims that the developer of the proposed tower project had withdrawn their application, attendees at the town hall cheered, though Morongo Valley resident Fernandez remained skeptical.
After she reached out directly to Obernolte’s office for confirmation, Fernandez told Z107.7, “We are not out of the woods yet. The proposed new location is still somewhere within Morongo Valley… The update provided by the congressman (last Saturday) was just for optics.”
Fernandez provided Z107.7 with her correspondence to Obernolte’s office, in which Office Manager and Field Representative Corrine Mora stated, “It’s our understanding that it is still in the Morongo Valley, but since it is outside the original area of analysis, they must start the whole process over again. BLM has not disclosed the new location to us yet. It is important to the Congressman that the community has the opportunity to weigh in for public comments, and BLM has assured us that as the application process progresses, that there will be another public comment period.”
Fernandez belongs to the community activist group Morongo Valley Residents Against the Tower, leading efforts to oppose the Interconnect LLC tower project since 2022.
