COUNTY COURTS MAY FACE SEVERE BUDGET CUTS
OUR LOCAL COURTS, ALONG WITH THE REST OF THE COUNTYíS COURTS ARE FACING SEVERE BUDGET CUTS. EVEN AS COURT OFFICIALS ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO HANDLE A CONTINUALLY GROWING CASELOAD, LACK OF NEW JUDGES AND AGING INFRASTRUCTURE, THE COURT SYSTEM IS NOW LOOKING AT A 10 PERCENT, ACROSS-THE- BOARD BUDGET CUT FROM THE STATE. "WE'RE IN THE PROCESS OF TRYING TO SEE WHERE WE CAN DO THAT WITH THE LEAST HARM TO THOSE THAT WE SERVE," SAID PRESIDING JUDGE JAMES C. MCGUIRE. WHEN THE COURTS BUDGET FOR THE COUNTY IS FINALIZED THIS WEEK, THE BIGGEST HITS WILL BE LIKELY DELIVERED TO THE COLLABORATIVE COURTS AND BEHAVIORAL HEALTH SERVICES. COLLABORATIVE COURTS HANDLE LESS-SERIOUS DRUG MATTERS AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, MENTAL HEALTH AND JUVENILE CONCERNS. THE SAME 10% CUT AFFECTS COURT SYSTEMS IN ALL OF THE STATE'S 58 COUNTIES FOLLOWING GOV. SCHWARZENEGGER'S SIGNING OF THE STATE'S $144.5 BILLION BUDGET LAST MONTH. A CONSTRUCTION PROJECTS ALREADY PLANNED FOR THE JOSHUA TREE COURT WILL NOT BE AFFECTED BECAUSE THOSE INVOLVE DEDICATED FUNDS. THE BUDGET REDUCTIONS IN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY ALSO WILL NOT RESULT IN LAYOFFS OR COURTHOUSE CLOSURES, MCGUIRE SAID.
