A 29 PALMS MARINE WAS KILLED IN SINGLE CAR ROLLOVER SUNDAY. CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL SERGEANT WILLIAM GREEN SAID THAT AT 9:20 SUNDAY NIGHT, 21-YEAR OLD JASON VERTA, WAS DRIVING HIS 2006 PONTIAC SOLSTICE EAST ON MORNING STAR MINE ROAD ABOUT 4 MILES EAST OF CIMA ROAD IN THE RURAL MOJAVE NATIONAL PRESERVE. AS HE ROUNDED A SLIGHT CURVE IN THE ROAD, VERTA SLIDE OFF THE ROADWAY INTO THE SOFT SANDY SHOULDER AND LOSS CONTROL, HE OVERCORRECTED, AND WENT INTO A SKID, ROLLING VIOLENTLY END OVER END AND LANDING OUT IN THE OPEN DESERT. VERTA’S PONTIAC WAS SPOTTED BY A PASSING MOTORIST WHO CALLED 9-1-1. ARRIVING EMERGENCY PERSONNEL DECLARED JASON VERTA DEAD AT THE SCENE, WITH MAJOR HEAD NECK AND CHEST INJURIES. THE CHP’S BARSTOW AREA OFFICE IS INVESTIGATING.

THE 29 PALMS CITY COUNCIL MEETS IN REGULAR SESSION TONIGHT. REPORTER KATIE ELWELL CHECKS THE COUNCIL’S AGENDA... THE PROPOSED ADOBE ROAD BAR, CLUB SILVER SCREEN, WILL COME BEFORE THE 29 PALMS CITY COUNCIL AND THE PUBLIC THIS EVENING AT 6. THE SHERIFF’S MORONGO BASIN SEARCH AND RESCUE TEAM IS GEARING UP FOR THIS YEARS DESERT RUN. REPORTER DAN STORK SAYS TICKET PRICES ARE LOWER THROUGH TOMORROW... MORONGO BASIN SEARCH AND RESCUE IS A VOLUNTEER GROUP THAT HAS BEEN SUPPORTING THE SHERIFF’S DEPARTMENT WITH DESERT RESCUES FOR OVER 50 YEARS. TRAINING IS EXTENSIVE, AND EQUIPMENT IS EXPENSIVE, RUNNING INTO HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS PER VOLUNTEER. TO DEFRAY COSTS, THERE IS AN ANNUAL OFF-ROAD VEHICLE FAMILY EVENT AT SOGGY DRY LAKE IN JOHNSON VALLEY. THIS YEAR, IT’S THE WEEKEND OF OCTOBER 3RD TO THE 5TH.
