THE BIG DECISION ON SUPER-WALMART..PUT OFF A MONTH
AFTER YEARS OF PLANNING, ENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES, PUBIC DEBATE AND HAND-WRINGING FROM BOTH SIDES, THE FINAL DECISION ON THE NEW YUCCA VALLEY SUPER WAL-MART WAS ON THE AGENDA FOR THE YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL MEETING LAST NIGHT. KARL GARDNER SAYS THE FINAL DECISION WAS.................PUT OFF.... THE YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL’S DECISION ON SUPER WALMART… WAIT AND SEE. THE DETERMINATION TO APPROVE PLANS AND PERMITS FOR SUPER WALMART WERE DELAYED UNTIL LATE NEXT MONTH, AFTER IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE TOWN RECEIVED ADDITIONAL SIGNIFICANT INFORMATION ON THE PROJECT. WITH THAT, DEPUTY TOWN MANAGER SHANE STUCKLE SAID, "WE ARE RECOMMENDING YOU CONTINUE THE PUBLIC HEARING" UNTIL A SPECIAL MEETING SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 25TH. AN ANTI-CLIMAX TO A LONG MEETING THAT SAW CLOSE TO 40 CITIZENS VOICING THEIR OPINIONS ON THE PROJECT. A PACKED YUCCA ROOM SAW SPIRITED DEBATE BOTH PRO AND CON, YET REMAINED CIVIL. ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERNS AND THE EFFECT ON LOCAL BUSINESS DOMINATED THE OPPOSITIONS VIEW. MORE JOBS, TAX REVENUES, LESS DRIVES DOWN THE HILL, AND CONVENIENCE WERE TOP ON THE PRO SIDE. ONE BURNING QUESTION, WHAT WILL HAPPEN TO THE OLD STORE IF THE PROJECT IS APPROVED. WALMART EXECUTIVE DONOVAN COLLIER SAID "THE EXISTING STORE HERE IN YUCCA VALLEY IS UNDER CONTRACT FOR SALE TO A DEVELOPER", AND CONTINUED BY SAYING "WE ARE GOING TO BE WORKING PRO ACTIVELY TO MAKE SURE IT’S RE-USED IN AN APPROPRIATE FASHION QUICKLY."

LOCAL RED CROSS NAMES CANDACE FRITZ AS EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
THE MORONGO BASIN CHAPTER OF THE AMERICAN RED CROSS HAS HIRED IT’S FIRST EVER PAID EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR. CANDACE FRITZ OF 29 PALMS WILL ASSUME THE LEADERSHIP STARTING JUNE 2. FRITZ IS THE FORMER PROGRAM MANAGER FOR REACH-OUT MORONGO BASIN. PRIOR TO THAT SHE WAS EMPLOYED BY THE PALMETTO CHAPTER OF THE RED CROSS IN SOUTH CAROLINA AS THE HEALTH, SAFETY, AND RESOURCE DIRECTOR FROM 1995-2000. FORMER VOLUNTEER EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SHIRLEY PETERS WILL REMAIN ACTIVE IN THE CHAPTER, PROVIDING TRAINING AND SUPPORT TO FRITZ AND READY FOR DEPLOYMENT FOR DISASTERS AROUND THE NATION. PETERS IS GETTING HIGH PRAISE FOR HER LEADERSHIP SINCE 2003. THE LOCAL RED CROSS MADE THE DECISION TO BRING IN PROFESSIONAL LEADERSHIP 2 MONTHS AGO, THE SEARCH LED BACK TO THEIR OWN NEIGHBORHOOD AND THE SELECTION OF CANDACE FRITZ.

COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE NAMES NEW PRESIDENT
AFTER A SEARCH AND AN INTERVIEW PROCESS, THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES FOR COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE HAVE SELECTED A NEW SUPERINTENDENT PRESIDENT FOR OUR LOCAL COMMUNITY COLLEGE. REPORTER TAMI ROLEFF INTRODUCES US TO THE NEW COLLEGE PRESIDENT.... THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE ANNOUNCED YESTERDAY THAT DR. ROGER WAGNER HAS BEEN NAMED THE NEW SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE. WAGNER WILL TAKE OVER ON JULY 1, REPLACING DR. PATRICIA CALDWELL, WHO HAS BEEN SERVING AS INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT/PRESIDENT SINCE AUGUST 2007 FOLLOWING THE DEPARTURE OF DR THOM ARMSTRONG LAST SUMMER. WAGNER, THE VICE PRESIDENT OF INSTRUCTION, HAS BEEN AT COPPER MOUNTAIN COLLEGE SINCE JULY 2007. BEFORE COMING TO COPPER MOUNTAIN, HE SERVED AT CROWDER COLLEGE IN MISSOURI SINCE 2000. WHILE THERE, HE WAS THE DEAN OF TECHNICAL EDUCATION AND BUSINESS/COMMUNITY RELATIONS, THE ASSOCIATE DEAN OF INSTRUCTION, AND THEIR DIRECTOR OF CUSTOMIZED TRAINING. WAGNER ALSO SERVED 21 YEARS IN THE U.S. AIR FORCE AS A MILITARY POLICEMAN. WAGNER EARNED HIS BACHELOR DEGREE IN SOCIAL SCIENCES FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF THE PHILIPPINES, HIS MASTER’S DEGREE IN ORGANIZATIONAL MANAGEMENT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF PHOENIX AND HIS DOCTORATE IN EDUCATIONAL LEADERSHIP FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA.

THE CALIFORNIA DESERT COALITION IS HAVING A HOOTENANNY TO RAISE FUNDS AND AWARENESS IN ITS FIGHT AGAINST THE PROPOSED POWER TRANSMISSION CORRIDOR THROUGH THE MORONGO BASIN AND SURROUNDING COMMUNITIES. OUR OWN HI-DESERT MEDICAL CENTER IS GETTING NATIONAL RECOGNITION FOR THEIR MARKETING CAMPAIGN. THE HOSPITAL’S MARKETING DEPARTMENT RECEIVED THE 2008 ASTER AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN HEALTHCARE MARKETING FOR ITS CORE VALUES ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN. THE HOSPITAL DISTRICT’S DIRECTOR OF MARKETING AND BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT., JOE RUDDON, SAID, "HI-DESERT MEDICAL CENTER HAS BEEN EXPERIENCING POSITIVE OUTCOMES FROM THE MORE THAN 24 MONTHS CAMPAIGN. IT HIGHLIGHTS THE DISTRICT’S ‘CORE VALUES’ AS A WAY OF TELLING POSITIVE STORIES." EACH VALUE HAS ITS OWN AD: INTEGRITY, SERVICE, STEWARDSHIP, INNOVATION, TEAMWORK AND DIGNITY. HI DESERT WATER DISTRICT HEARS SEWAGE UPDATE, STRATEGIC PLAN
THE HI-DESERT WATER DISTRICT MET WEDNESDAY TO HEAR ABOUT PROGRESS ON A SEWER SYSTEM AND STRATEGIC PLANNING. REPORTER KARL GARDNER WAS THERE AND HAS DETAILS... A CRITICAL LOOK AT PLANS FOR THE PROPOSED YUCCA VALLEY SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT, WAS THE TOP ISSUE AT WEDNESDAY’S HI DESERT WATER DISTRICT BOARD MEETING. A PANEL OF HIGH EXPERIENCED PROFESSIONALS IN SEWAGE TREATMENT WAS ASSEMBLED TO TAKE A CLOSE LOOK AT THE PRE DESIGN, OFFERING SOME INTERESTING INPUT. PROJECT MANAGER JOE GLOWITZ TOLD THE BOARD THAT SEWAGE PROJECTS "TAKE A LONG TIME". GLOWITZ CONTINUED BY SAYING THE GROUP DOES "BELIEVE THAT WE SHOULD EXPLORE POSSIBLE PARTNERSHIPS WITH ALTERNATIVE ENERGY SOURCES SUCH AS SOLAR." IN THE SAME VANE, GLOWITZ SAID "ONE OF THE THINGS THEY DID RULE OUT WAS CO-GENERATION WITH METHANE PRODUCTION", ADDING "OUR PLANT WILL NOT BE LARGE ENOUGH TO SUPPORT CO-GENERATION FROM THE METHANE GAS." IN OTHER ACTIONS, THE BOARD APPROVED RETAINING THEIR CURRENT AUDITOR, THEN PASSED THE DISTRICT’S 2008 STRATEGIC PLAN, WITH MODIFICATION. DIRECTOR WADE WHITE ASKED THAT THE URBAN WATER MANAGEMENT PLAN, DUE FOR AN UPDATE IN 2010, BE ADDED TO THE DOCUMENT. WHITE ALSO OPINED THAT SHORT TERM WATER AVAILABILITY BE ADDED, AN IDEA OPPOSED BY DIRECTORS BOB STADUM AND SHELDON HOUGH.

MORONGO VALLEY SOCCER SIGN-UPS SATURDAY IN YUCCA VALLEY
THE MORONGO VALLEY SOCCER PROGRAM WILL BE SIGNING UP PLAYERS IN YUCCA VALLEY TOMORROW. THE MORONGO VALLEY SOCCER SIGNUPS WILL BE FROM 10-2 TOMORROW AT THE MASTER CRAFT KITCHENS LOCATION, FORMERLY SOUTHWEST FETISH, ON THE HIGHWAY.
