CORONER IDENTIFIES Y.V. WOMAN KILLED IN SUNDAY HEAD-ON CRASH
MORE DETAILS TODAY ON A HORRIFIC HEAD ON COLLISION THAT LEFT ONE DEAD AND FIVE INJURED SUNDAY EVENING. SHERIFF OFFICIALS SAID THAT AT 8:15, CHERYL MASON 42, OF YUCCA VALLEY WAS DRIVING HER 2001 CHEVY METRO SOUTH ON HIGHWAY 247 JUST NORTH OF HIGHWAY 62 AT WARREN WAY IN YUCCA VALLEY, WHEN SHE DRIFTED ACROSS THE DOUBLE YELLOW LINE… SLAMMING HEAD ON INTO A 2006 FORD F-150 PICK-UP DRIVEN BY 33 YEAR OLD JOHN MAYFIELD. THE FORCE OF THE COLLISION KILLED CHERYL MASON WHO WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD AT THE SCENE. A PASSENGER IN THE METRO, IDENTIFIED ONLY AS "DEBORAH" OF YUCCA VALLEY SUSTAINED MAJOR INJURES AND TAKEN BY HELICOPTER TO DESERT HOSPITAL IN PALM SPRINGS WHERE SHE REMAINS IN ICU. JOHN MAYFIELD, HIS WIFE SARAH MAYFIELD 32 AND THEIR TWO CHILDREN, A 4 MONTH AND 3 YEAR OLD, ALL RECEIVED MINOR INJURES AND WERE TAKEN TO HI DESERT MEDICAL CENTER FOR TREATMENT. THE CAUSE OF THE COLLISION REMAINS UNDER INVESTIGATION.

MARINE SERGEANT HELD IN FATAL SHOOTING ABOARD 29 PALMS BASE

A MARINE SERGEANT HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH MANSLAUGHTER IN THE SHOOTING OF A FELLOW MARINE. SGT LINCOLN CRALL, 26, IS ACCUSED OF SHOOTING LANCE CPL. CAMERON BABCOCK, 19, HITTING HIM IN THE CHEST, IN HIS BARRACKS ABOARD THE COMBAT CENTER. SGT CRALL SHOT BABCOCK WITH A PRIVATELY OWNED GUN, SAID LT. JAYMIE SICKING, A SPOKESWOMAN FOR THE 1ST MARINE DIVISION. BOTH MARINES WERE ASSIGNED TO THE 3RD BATTALION, 7TH MARINES. SGT CRALL, OF BOULDER, COLORADO NOW FACES COURT-MARTIAL ON ONE COUNT OF MANSLAUGHTER AND IS SCHEDULED TO APPEAR IN TWENTYNINE PALMS TOMORROW. ON JANUARY 20, MILITARY POLICE FOUND BABCOCK, WITH A GUNSHOT WOUND TO HIS CHEST AND WAS TAKEN TO THE NAVAL HOSPITAL WERE HE WAS PRONOUNCED DEAD. INVESTIGATORS SAID THE SHOOTING APPEARED TO HAVE BEEN THE RESULT OF NEGLIGENT HANDLING OF A PRIVATELY OWNED GUN. IT DID NOT APPEAR TO BE INTENTIONAL OR SELF-INFLICTED. IT WAS NOT CLEAR WHETHER SGT CRALL OWNED THE GUN OR IT BELONGED TO SOMEONE ELSE MARINE CORPS POLICY PROHIBITS PERSONAL FIREARMS IN THE BARRACKS. LANCE CORPORAL BABCOCK, OF PLYMOUTH INDIANA, WAS AN INFANTRY RIFLEMAN. HE HAD RECENTLY RETURNED FROM A COMBAT DEPLOYMENT TO IRAQ BEFORE THE SHOOTING, AND WAS SCHEDULED TO RE-DEPLOY TO IRAQ WITH KILO 3/7 THIS WINTER.

AN EARTHQUAKE RATTLES YUCCA VALLEY YESTERDAY

A MODERATE EARTHQUAKE RATTLED THE AREA BETWEEN YUCCA VALLEY AND DESERT HOT SPRINGS MONDAY EVENING. ACCORDING TO CAL-TECH SEISMOLOGISTS, THE 3.4 MAGNITUDE EARTHQUAKE OCCURRED AT 06:00:PM 6 MILES SOUTH OF YUCCA VALLEY AND 6 MILES NE OF DESERT HOT SPRINGS. WHILE THE QUAKE WAS FELT WIDELY THERE WERE NO REPORTS OF DAMAGE OR INJURY.

YESTERDAY. IT IS HIS LATEST OFFICIAL EMERGENCE TO DATE. WARMER WEATHER AND A SPECTACULAR WILDFLOWER SEASON FINALLY LURED HIM FROM HIS BURROW. THE TORTOISE’S DEBUT IS HAILED BY THOUSANDS OF STUDENTS IN NEVADA AND CALIFORNIA WHO HAVE BEEN STUDYING MOJAVE DESERT WEATHER, TEMPERATURES, AND CONDITIONS TO SCIENTIFICALLY ESTIMATE WHEN MOJAVE MAX WOULD EMERGE FROM HIS BURROW IN 2008. THE MORONGO UNIFIED SCHOOL BOARD MEETS IN REGULAR SESSION TONIGHT, REPORTER DAN STORK SAYS EARLY CONTRACT AGREEMENTS WILL BE DISCUSSED AS WELL AS AN UPDATE ON SPENDING OF SCHOOL BOND FUNDS......

THE OPEN SESSION OF THE APRIL 15TH MEETING OF THE MORONGO UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT BOARD OF EDUCATION STARTS AT 7 PM. THE MEETING IS AT TWENTYNINE PALMS JUNIOR HIGH SCHOOL, AND STARTS WITH A PERFORMANCE BY THE SCHOOL’S BAND. THE DISTRICT AND THE MORONGO TEACHERS’ ASSOCIATION WILL PRESENT THEIR JOINT SUNSHINE ITEMS FOR THE 2008-2009 SCHOOL YEAR. THE CITIZENS’ OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE FOR MEASURE O WILL PRESENT ITS ANNUAL REPORT TO THE BOARD OF EDUCATION. 8-1 IS THE LEAGUE RECORD FOR THE YVHS VARSITY TENNIS TEAM TROJANS AFTER A STUNNING VICTORY OVER THE CITRUS HILL HAWKS MONDAY IN YUCCA VALLEY. COACH JENNIFER HARLOW SAID 17-1 WAS THE FINAL SCORE WITH NEWCOMER FRESHMAN JUSTIN MCGOWAN WINNING TWO OUT OF THREE SETS IN HIS LEAGUE DEBUT. THE TEAM WILL TRAVEL TO DESERT HOT SPRINGS HIGH SCHOOL TOMORROW AND TAKE ON BANNING HIGH AT HOME ON FRIDAY.
