CONCLUSIONS WERE JUMPED TO.... YUCCA VALLEY IS NOT ANNEXING THE MESA
WHAT PART OF THE TOWN OF YUCCA VALLEY IS NOT TRYING TO ANNEX THE YUCCA MESA AREA DON’T THEY UNDERSTAND. Z107-7 MANAGING EDITOR KARL GARDNER SAYS A MESA AREA "CHICKEN LITTLE" GROUP THAT SPRANG UP IN OPPOSITION JUMPED TO CONCLUSIONS AND HAS OVERREACTED -------
WHILE SOME THINK IT’S A ‘DONE DEAL’; THE TOWN OF YUCCA VALLEY IS NOT GOING TO ANNEX YUCCA MESA INTO THE TOWN LIMITS. MAYOR FRANK LUCKINO SAID "WE ARE NOT ANNEXING YUCCA MESA". THE CONTROVERSY BEGAN LAST AUGUST WHEN THE TOWN COUNCIL ASKED TO EXPAND ITS SPHERE OF INFLUENCE, TO ROUGHLY THE SAME BOUNDARIES AS THE HI DESERT WATER DISTRICT. A GROUP, CALLING ITSELF ‘STOP YUCCA MESA ANNEXATION COALITION’, SAY ON THEIR WEBSITE THEY HAVE "FORMED IN RESPONSE TO THE TOWN OF YUCCA VALLEY'S THREAT TO OVERTAKE YUCCA MESA" AND IS ACTIVELY TRYING TO STOP THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE MOVE. THE COALITION SAYS THE "TOWN FORESEES A POPULATION EXPLOSION" AND "IT SELFISHLY WANTS TO DESTROY YUCCA MESA AS IT NOW EXISTS" SAYING ITS NOTHING MORE THAN A LAND GRAB. DISAGREEING, MAYOR LUCKINO POINTS OUT THE TOWN HAS TO EVALUATE HOW IT CAN DO THINGS BETTER TO SERVE THE IMMEDIATE AREA, ADDING, "IT’S AN EVALUATION PROCESS, THAT’S ALL IT IS". TOWN MANAGER ANDY TAKATA SAID THE SPHERE OF INFLUENCE IT A TOOL FOR TOWN, SAYING "THE COUNTY HAS TO LET US KNOW, IF THEIR GOING TO REZONE LAND, THEY HAVE TO OFFICIALLY LET US KNOW ALL THAT INFORMATION, CAUSE THAT COULD EFFECT US IN THE FUTURE". MAYOR LUCKINO AGAIN STRESSED, "TODAY WE ARE NOT ANNEXING YUCCA MESA".

ONE ARREST AFTER GAS STOLEN FROM BIGHORN DESERT VIEW WATER AGENCY
A LANDERS AREA MAN WAS ARRESTED AFTER HE WAS TRACKED BACK TO HIS HOME AFTER STEALING GAS FROM THE BIGHORN DESERT VIEW WATER AGENCY. DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO THE WATER AGENCY FACILITY ON JEMEZ TRAIL WEDNESDAY MORNING AFTER ARRIVING EMPLOYEES DISCOVERED THE GATE HAD BEEN KICKED IN AND GAS STOLEN. THE THIEF STOLE GAS AND LEFT THE TANK OPEN ALLOWING MORE GAS TO SPILL ON TO THE GROUND, ABOUT 370 TOTAL GALLONS WERE LOST. SHOE TRACKS LED RIGHT TO THE FRONT DOOR OF A NEARBY RESIDENCE. JASON MILLER, 34, WAS CONTACTED AND THEN PLACED UNDER ARREST FOR INVESTIGATION OF GRAND THEFT. JASON MILLER WAS BOOKED INTO THE MORONGO BASIN JAIL WITH BAIL SET AT $20,000.00. A COUNTY FIRE HAZ-MAT TEAM RESPONDED TO THE SITE BUT DETERMINED THE WATER AGENCY WAS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE CLEAN UP OF THE SPILLED GASOLINE.

ARMY DESERTER ARRESTED IN JOSHUA TREE
AN ARMY DESERTER WAS NABBED AFTER A DISTURBING THE PEACE CALL IN JOSHUA TREE. SHERIFF SPOKESWOMAN ANITA BAKER SAID AT 10:52 TUESDAY NIGHT, DEPUTIES RESPONDED TO THE 61000 BLOCK OF VERBENA ROAD ON COMPLAINTS THAT SOMEONE HAD BEEN DRINKING AND WAS BEING LOUD. ARRIVING DEPUTIES CONTACTED NATHAN OWENS, 27. A ROUTINE CHECK REVEALED OWENS WAS WANTED BY THE U.S. ARMY FOR DESERTION. NATHAN OWENS WAS ARRESTED FOR PUBLIC INTOXICATION AND ON A NO BAIL MILITARY DESERTER WARRANT AND BOOKED INTO THE WEST VALLEY DETENTION CENTER.

TWENTYNINE PALMS YOUTH CLUB BURGLARIZED
$92 WAS THE NET TAKE AFTER A BREAK-IN AT THE TWENTYNINE PALMS YOUTH CLUB. SHERIFF SPOKESWOMAN ANITA BAKER SAID WORKERS ARRIVED AT THE CLUB AT LUCKIE PARK AROUND 2 PM MONDAY, THEY FOUND THE CONTENTS HAD BEEN STREWN AROUND. LOOKING CLOSER, THEY DISCOVERED THAT SOMEONE HAD BROKEN INTO THE SAFE THAT HELD PROCEEDS FROM BINGO GAMES. BAKER SAID THAT THERE WERE NO SIGNS OF FORCED ENTRY. ANYONE WITH INFORMATION ABOUT THE BREAK-IN AT THE TWENTYNINE PALMS YOUTH CLUB IS ASKED TO CALL THE MORONGO BASIN SHERIFF STATION AT 366-4175.

AFTER JOSHUA TREE FIRE HYDRANTS FOUND INOPERABLE, SOME QUESTIONS
AFTER DISCOVERING A NUMBER OF FIRE HYDRANTS IN THE JOSHUA TREE AREA WERE NOT WORKING, REPORTER DAN STORK STARTED ASKING SOME QUESTIONS. IN THE 2ND IN IS 2-PART SERIES, STORK ASKED JUST WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR THOSE HYDRANTS? -------
WHEN FIRE HYDRANTS ARE OUT OF SERVICE FOR EXTENDED PERIODS OF TIME, RESIDENTS ARE UNDERSTANDABLY WORRIED ABOUT: WHAT IF THERE IS A FIRE? WE ASKED COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT BATTALION CHIEF DAN MUNSEY IN YUCCA VALLEY HOW FIRE FIGHTERS PREPARE FOR THIS. HE TOLD US THAT THE FIRE DEPARTMENT GETS REPORTS FROM THE WATER DISTRICTS ABOUT HYDRANTS WHICH ARE UNAVAILABLE. THEN FIRE FIGHTERS INSPECT THE AREA, AHEAD OF ANY NEED, AND PLAN HOW THEY WILL GET WATER TO THE VICINITY IF A NEED ARISES. MUNSEY ADDED THAT A FREQUENT PROBLEM IS NOT SO MUCH NON-FUNCTIONING HYDRANTS, BUT SPARSE NUMBERS OF HYDRANTS IN MANY AREAS OF THE MORONGO BASIN. TO DEAL WITH THAT, THE LOCAL FIRE DISTRICT HAS A WATER TENDER WITH A CAPACITY OF 3000 GALLONS, WHICH MUNSEY SAID IS SUFFICIENT TO COVER MOST STRUCTURE FIRES. ADDITIONAL TENDERS ARE AVAILABLE FROM OTHER JURISDICTIONS AS NEEDED. FURTHER, FIRE TRUCKS HAVE SUBSTANTIAL WATER CAPACITY. FOR EXAMPLE, STATION 36 IN JOSHUA TREE HAS A TRUCK WITH A 750-GALLON CAPACITY. MULTIPLE TRUCKS TYPICALLY RESPOND TO ANY FIRE, AND THEY CAN SHUTTLE WATER TO A FIRE AS NEEDED. FINALLY, MUNSEY TOLD US THAT FIRE FIGHTERS CAN LAY A COUPLE OF THOUSAND FEET OF LARGE-DIAMETER HOSE FROM FUNCTIONING HYDRANTS TO THE LOCATION OF A FIRE.

COUNTY ASSESSOR ADMITS DRUG USE, SAYS WON’T RUN AGAIN
AFTER MONTHS OF ATTEMPTING TO EVADE PUBLIC SCRUTINY, COUNTY ASSESSOR BILL POSTMUS ADDRESSED THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS TUESDAY AND ADMITTED TO ALLEGATIONS OF SUBSTANCE ABUSE. HE SAID HE WOULD NOT SEEK REELECTION. COUNTY SUPERVISORS HAD CALLED UPON POSTMUS NUMEROUS TIMES TO COME BEFORE THEM AND ANSWER QUESTION STEMMING FORM ALLEGATIONS OF A METHAMPHETAMINE ADDICTION AND USING HIS OFFICE TO CONDUCT PARTISAN POLITICS. "I MUST ACKNOWLEDGE THAT DURING MY TENURE AS ASSESSOR, MISTAKES HAVE DEFINITELY BEEN MADE". POSTMUS TOLD THE BOARD. IN DECEMBER THE BOARD INITIATED PROCEEDINGS TO REMOVE POSTMUS FROM OFFICE. A GRAND JURY REPORT IN JUNE CRITICIZED THE ASSESSOR. THE DISTRICT ATTORNEY HAS SAID A CRIMINAL INVESTIGATION OF POSTMUS IS UNDERWAY. POSTMUS READ A STATEMENT AND SAID HE HAD OVERCOME A SUBSTANCE-ABUSE PROBLEM. MULTIPLE ANONYMOUS SOURCES HAVE SAID HE PLANS TO FINISH HIS TERM AS ASSESSOR, WHICH ENDS IN 2010. THE SUPERVISORS COULD NOT QUESTION THE ASSESSOR BECAUSE TAKING SUCH ACTION HAD NOT BEEN ON THE AGENDA.
