MVCSD discusses new methods to manage Covington Park, including community member’s ‘feasibility study’ for dog park

Last night, the Morongo Valley Community Services District Board of Directors held their regular meeting in Covington Park’s multipurpose room.

The meeting began with public comment where community member Foster Tucker gauged interest for his dog park proposal; an initial “feasibility study” to see if the idea is sustainable without taking more money and time from the CSD. To measure the desire as well as potential funding, Tucker surveyed various Morongo Valley businesses and community members. Out of the fifty-one responses, Tucker reported seventeen people agreed they would contribute funds, ten people said they’d contribute material, and forty-seven people agreed to contribute towards the project once it was approved. For agenda items, the board approved the preliminary budget workshop for a special meeting on Wednesday, May 7. Finance Director Johnny Tolbert set a goal that the board could then generate a proposed budget for the following regular meeting on May 21, then a final budget for the June 18 regular meeting. The board then approved the audit engagement letter from their accountants at Smith, Marion, and Co.

For new methods to properly manage Covington Park, the board discussed various options, including creating a five-member standing committee to oversee the park; developing non-profit status; continuing to finish getting the multipurpose room’s kitchen up to code and liquidating storage spaces; attracting the attention of local artists for potential mural submissions, and establishing more visible signage on Vale Street that could direct people to the park.
