MUSD Principals Discuss Protocols and Response for social media threats

Morongo Unified School District High School Principals were the guests on last weeks Z1077 Up Close Show, and they discussed their protocols for social media threats. Assignment reporter Gabriel Hart brings us highlights from that conversation.

On last week’s “Up Close Show,” Gary Daigneault spoke with MUSD principals Justin Monical of Yucca Valley High School and Mike Ruggiero of 29 Palm High School, regarding September’s flare-up of on-campus violence. On the subject of deducing validity of threats on social media, Monical stated MUSD “must treat each one of these situations as serious until we get answers to our questions to determine how safely we can proceed with education that day.”

29 Palms High School Principal Mike Ruggerio gave a rundown of MUSD protocol to social media threats.

“Our immediate response is to alert law enforcement. We alert our juvenile officer and alert 911. Next, a phone call would be made to the Superintendent’s office to make sure they’re aware of the reported threat. Then, depending on the nature of threat or report, we immediately take measured action against the perceived level of imminent threat.”
