MUSD comments on new cell phone policy during last week’s Up Close Show

On Friday (August 8), MUSD Assistant Superintendents for Secondary and Elementary Education Amy Woods and Dr. Graciela Guiterrez were the guests on the Z107.7 Up Close Show. Host Gary Daigneault asked about the district’s new policy regarding phones. Woods outlined the new policies, saying:

“California passed the phone free school act last year and to proactively address this we hosted between six and eight different meetings involving parents and teachers and students and community members to understand how cell phones impact our students.”

“We developed our new cell phone policy for our secondary schools which are junior highs and our high schools excluding Black Rock High School. The program consists of the checking out phone pouches to students, just like we would check out an English book. It’s called a Yonder pouch and students will never without their cell phone on their person they will just be in a fabric pouch. It eliminates the temptation for distraction inside the classroom and for all different other kinds of safety purposes so we do check that out to you for free.”

“We need to give lots of of grace time to develop a routine.”
