Just three years ago, Measure Y funded resurfacing the aging runway at the Yucca Valley Airport. Last night, Mayor Robert Lombardo was the special guest at the Yucca Valley Airport District Board of Directors meeting to discuss a potential partnership between the Airport District Board and the Town of Yucca Valley to continue a much-needed upgrade and possible expansion of a historic and valuable Community asset.
Board President Gerard Noonan led the conversation about Airport improvements, including refurbishing transient parking, establishing a fuel facility, and adding much-needed hangar space. The discussion also included potentially expanding the 35-acre facility to provide hanger space.
Mayor Lombardo emphasized the importance of the Airport in times of crisis, like wildfires or earthquakes. It serves as a vital hub for emergency operations and economic growth.
Funding these ambitious projects remains a key hurdle. Mayor Lombardo encouraged the Airport Board to engage with the Measure Y committee to explore an avenue for financial support. Additional suggestions for next-step options include contacting County Transportation representative Dennis Woods regarding potential support. Lastly, scheduling a follow-up meeting focused on developing an emergency response plan utilizing revitalized airport facilities and resources.
The discussion of Yucca Valley Airport improvements remains open and ongoing. The Board understands the importance of community support and engagement and welcomes the public to future meetings.
