Melanoma, caused by ultraviolet (UV) radiation primarily from the sun, is a rare form of skin cancer that can spread throughout the body. Protection and early detection are essential for continued good health.
The American Cancer Society estimates there will be about 100,000 new cases of melanoma and over 6,000 deaths in the United States this year. Melanoma is more common in men overall, but before age 50, the rates are higher in women. Melanoma can occur anywhere on the body. In men, it is often found from the shoulders to the hips or from the head and neck. In women, skin cancer most often forms on the arms and legs. Unusual moles, exposure to sunlight, and health history may be indicators. If you have tattoos use extra care when checking for changes on the skin.
Remember to always use sun protection and have an annual medical checkup.
