Local rescue helps with cross-country dog adoption after owner passes away

Many pet owners find it difficult to adjust following the loss of one of our four-legged family members. Equally or more difficult to consider is what would happen to our pets if suddenly we weren’t around to care for them. The owner of Samantha and Thor surely experienced such anxiety, and when he passed following a long illness the future of the male and female mixed breed Labradors was anything but certain.

Just days after their Morongo Valley owner’s passing, and with no one to care for them, Samantha and Thor wound up at Yucca Valley Animal Care & Control where the clock began ticking. Animals that aren’t adopted or claimed may be humanely euthanized in as little as 5 days.

Nearly 3,000 miles away in Waterbury, Connecticut, the brother and sister-in-law of the orphaned animals’ owner began making calls; they needed favors. They needed Animal Care & Control to extend the period before Samantha and Thor would be euthanized. They needed help arranging to get the two pets across the country without breaking the bank. And they needed a rescue to take the dogs in while they worked out the details.

Things were looking hopeless for the Connecticut couple, not to mention Samantha and Thor. That’s when they reached out to Hooks Home Bound Rescue. Without hesitation, Hooks said, “Yes, we’ll help.”

So after nearly two weeks at Yucca Valley Animal Care & Control, Samantha and Thor were released to Hooks Home Bound Rescue which arranged for the dog’s care, vet visits, and health certificates.

The 501(c)3 non-profit also managed donations for supplies, travel crates, and discount travel. So this Friday (September 8, 2023), Samantha and Thor will board Alaska Airlines flight 1269 from LAX to Seattle and ultimately on to Connecticut and their new forever home.
