There are two volunteer opportunities at Joshua Tree National Park, and you must apply to them by Friday (5/23).
Visitor Service Representatives
Volunteer Visitor Service Representatives provide information to visitors at Joshua Tree Visitor Center, ensuring that their visits are safe and enjoyable. These volunteers will work once per week through September.
Responsibilities include:
- Provide friendly assistance and accurate information to visitors at the park visitor center in Joshua Tree and/or Twentynine Palms
- Support NPS and partner staff in general site operations
- Provide map orientation, hiking information, park literature, safety information, and information on natural and cultural resources
- Operate gift shop cash register for sales (not federal money)
- Stock publications and clean exhibits
- Collect visitation data like visitor contacts
- Answer phone calls from the public
- Occasionally provide visitor information outside, weather permitting
- Follow standard procedures for opening visitor centers, closing visitor centers, and providing visitor information
- Some volunteers may also serve as docents, providing interpretive programs at the visitor centers or in the park
- This is a uniformed position – must wear NPS volunteer uniform

National Trails Day Volunteers
A National Trails Day Tune-Up project is coming up on Friday (June 6th) and Saturday (June 7th) from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Volunteers will work alongside park staff to perform brushing and delineation work to help ensure these trails remain accessible for generations. This project involves moderate physical activity including hiking 3 miles with limited elevation gain, lifting and carrying rocks, and repeated bending.
Training and supervision will be provided by park staff. This volunteer event will take place at a trail near the west entrance of the park.
Duties include:
- Be able to lift 20 pounds repeatedly, bend and stand repeatedly, and safely hike 3 miles within 2 hours
- Bring a backpack with sufficient water, snacks
- Wear long pants, closed-toe shoes, and sun protection
- Be comfortable working in warm/hot weather
- Provide their own transportation to and from work sites
- Live within 90 minutes of the park
- Be at least 16 years of age, and youth 16 to 17 must be accompanied by a legal guardian
