Art is happening in the hi-desert this weekend, as the HWY 62 Open Studio Art Tours continues, coinciding with the second Saturday Joshua Tree Art Walk.
More than 130 local, hi-desert artists will be opening up their studios to neighbors, tourists, and art appreciators. This annual event brings people to the hi-desert from all over the country.
The event is put on annually by the Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, and is an autumn staple for the local artist community. This year’s event will feature more music and performance art than ever before.
Attendees should pick up a Hwy 62 Open Studio Directory that includes a complete list of artists, maps and directions. These can be found in shops, galleries and welcome centers throughout our community. There is also a handy app for smartphones.
And if that’s not enough art for you, tonight only, the Second Saturday Art Walk returns to Joshua Tree Art Galleries.
La Matadora Gallery will be hosting a Toga Party honoring the Greek Goddess NYX, the goddess of the Night. Shahasp Valentine and Colleena Hake will be showing jewelry, and they have teamed up with local band, Landroid, performing at 8pm. Party 6-9pm La Matadora Gallery (Art Tours Studio 52) 61857 Twentynine Palms Highway.
Hey There Projects debuts a new exhibition called “Bonhomme de chemin” from Yucca Valley artist Sofia Badaoui. She grew up with one foot in France and the other in Morocco and these experiences are represented in her knotted rugs, which will be on display at the gallery.
And for the first time this year, the HWY 62 Art Tours is hosting events at night. Alien Probe, the local band that makes music about aliens and being probed by aliens, will be performing as part of “Art Tours After Dark” tonight at the Booth House in Twentynine Palms. Alien Probe members Space Chick, Theramina Rockmore, and VOXOV beamed into Z107.7’s Morning Show to talk about the show.
“We’re here to talk about the eye candy, the ear ecstasy, the brain food that is the spontaneous, improvised, psychedelic rock and roll explosion of educational theater, a crash course in spacey subjects. Our shows are a wild explosion of alien activity on stage and engaging in interactive experience that encourages and welcomes audience participation.
Please dress up in your space-iest attire.
I want to mention we’ll be playing tonight in Twentynine Palms, but we are going to be doing a little snippet of a video to submit to America’s Got Talent, because America’s Got Talent actually contacted us and said they really appreciated our unique sound and authentic fun. I don’t know if they’d seen us live yet. We are going to send them a video, just a short little snippet, and we would love it if you would wear your craziest, spacious, wildest desert attire so that we can really show them that not only does America have talent, but America’s Got Aliens.”
Alien Probe is playing a free show tonight at the Booth House, located at 75727 Baseline Road in Twentynine Palms. Doors open at 6 p.m., show starts at 7 p.m.
