How you can help maintain a clean and plentiful Aquifer in the Morongo Basin

Z107.7 News reported that for customers of the Hi-Desert Water District, Joshua Basin Water District, and the Bighorn-Desert View Water Agency independent analyses shows their water exceeds minimum safety standards for more than 100 different contaminants. And while our local water agencies do all they can to maintain those high standards, you also play a role in the safety of our water.

The public can assist local districts to keep our drinking water safe by keeping pollutants out of the aquifer. Your motor vehicle can be a source of pollutants so check it regularly for leaking fluids.

When replacing fluids, use a funnel to prevent spills. And when making repairs and changing your oil, use drip pans and drop cloths.

Yard waste has the potential to carry hazardous landscaping chemicals like pesticides so properly dispose of construction waste and trash from around your yard. Ground-water contamination can also come from pharmaceuticals, solvents, and drain cleaners poured down your sink or toilet.

Consider giving up chemical fertilizer and instead mix food scraps with animal manure for a nutrient-rich compost.

These tips and others come from the Bighorn-Desert  Water Agency Consumer Confidence Report.
