How to stay cool during California’s summer heat wave

During the hottest time of the day, public facilities will bring you indoors or offer a place to cool off and relax. Here are some suggestions and their hours of operation. The Yucca Valley Community Center is open Monday through Thursday. The Hi-Desert Nature Museum is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. The County library is open Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday. The Yucca Valley Senior Center is available Monday through Friday. The Yucca Valley Public Pool is open during the week from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The Morongo Basin Center for Healthy Generations is open Monday through Saturday.

When temperatures reach over 110, the community center is open for cooling and water.

During this week of extreme temperatures, all public libraries are serving as cooling centers, including:

  • Yucca Valley Branch Library, located at 57271 29 Palms Highway
  • Joshua Tree Branch Library, located at 6465 Park Boulevard
  • Twentynine Palms Branch Library, located at 6078 Adobe Rd

All libraries will function as cooling centers during their open hours, Mondays through Wednesdays from 11 a.m to 7 p.m., Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Reach Out Morongo Basin will open their Senior Center in Twentynine Palms, located at 6539 Adobe Road, whenever the temperature rises above 115 degrees.
