Homes near JTNP entrance lose water, find leak – UPDATED with Gallery

Updated with gallery below.

About a dozen residences at the top of Quail Springs Road near the national park entrance in Joshua Tree had no water from the tap but witnessed a spectacular water show Tuesday.

The homes lost water service about 11 a.m. Tuesday when a non-water district work crew in the area damaged a water line resulting in a massive, geyser-like leak. A responding emergency crew from Joshua Basin Water District repaired the damage and restored water service in the area in under two hours. But acting in an abundance of caution the district opted to flush the water tank connected to the broken pipe to eliminate any possible contamination.

Resident Carrie Dagher was heading out for a hike about 6 p.m. when she was struck by the unusual sound of water… raging water that she said sounded like Yosemite Falls.

The flushing went on until about 8 p.m. sending tens of thousands of gallons of water cascading from the tank, down the hill, and into a wash along Quail Springs Road.
