“Help Yourself, Help Your Neighbor” Emergency and Disaster expo on Saturday (5/20)

Members of the Morongo Basin Community are invited to attend an emergency and disaster preparedness expo coined “Help Yourself, Help Your Neighbor” at the Yucca Valley Walmart parking lot tomorrow (5/20) from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm at 58501 Twentynine Palms Highway. This event is presented by local community leaders Marjorie Smith of Community Organizations Active in Disaster (COAD), Justin Merino of the High Desert Emergency Action Alliance (HDEAA) & Morongo Basin Fire Safe Council.

The “Help Yourself, Help Your Neighbor” expo will feature activities and exhibits that will provide attendees with important information about preparing for and responding to emergencies and disasters. For example, participants will learn about emergency kits, evacuation plans, and how to stay informed during an emergency.

The event will also include hands-on demonstrations, workshops, and presentations by experts in the field. Participating agencies and groups include the San Bernardino County Fire Department, Morongo Basin Health District, Marine Base K9 Team, American Red Cross, High Desert Emergency Action Alliance, Town of Yucca Valley, Desert Region Fire Safe Council, San Bernardino County Sheriffs Department, Hi-Desert Water District, Valley Star Community Services, Kiwanis, Rescue Residence, CERT, ARES, Serve, JOSAR and more. Help Yourself, Help Your Neighbor is free to attend, and all community members are encouraged to participate.

After a long successful career as a Photostylist and producer in New York and Los Angeles, Hilary Sloane moved to the Morongo Basin and began a new career as a journalist and documentary photographer, getting a journalism certification from Michigan State. Hilary is a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists (SEJ) and has documented the work of local and International non-profits. She has a podcast on Sound Cloud and is looking forward to adding more. Her favorite pastime is watching the wildlife around her home, traveling, and meeting new people.
