Heading out to the National Park in Winter? How to be desert-prepared.

On last week’s Up Close Show, Gary Daigneault spoke with Joshua Tree National Park Preventative Search and Rescue Coordinator Anna Marini. The organization, which is associated with the National Park system, encompasses 30 volunteers who provide information to hikers and visitors in advance of hikes and climbs within the park. Marini is involved with the implementation of signage at trailheads and her volunteer team works to educate visitors who may underestimate the desert elements. In their informative conversation, Marini provided guidance for those visiting the National Park in the winter months.

“A lot of people think the winter time, we don’t need to think about sun protection, but you really feel the sun here, So wearing some kind of sun protective clothing is really really helpful. A hat, long sleeves, still wearing pants, something that’s breathable that’s still going to protect your skin. And throwing on some sun screen on your face.

And thinking about layers, being able to take off or put on what you need. I always carry hats and gloves in this time of year.

If you’re not comfortable out there, you’re not going to have a good time.”

The entire conversation, which includes vital outdoor information, including the 10 essential items you should take on a desert hike, can be heard as a podcast right here.
