The Mojave National Preserve is continuing to recover from storms and fires this year – and they’ve closed a few more areas for renovations.
Beginning on Tuesday the National park Service has closed the public restrooms and parking area at the Kelso Depot just northeast of the Morongo Basin. They say that the current facilities have frequent issues that force emergency closures and repairs can take weeks as parts for the current facilities are limited.
Preserves encourages visitors to prepare and plan for this closure by preplanning their routes with other available restrooms either before or after entering the preserve. The nearest restroom facility is located at Kelso Dunes Trailhead, approximately 12 miles south of the Kelso Depot, . Other alternative locations outside the preserve include Baker, CA located 35 miles northwest of Kelso, or Primm, NV located 60 miles northeast of the Kelso Area.
The renovation is expected to be complete by mid-January 2024. Status of this and other facilities will be updated at go.nps.gov/MojaveConditions.
