Flamingo Heights 640 Dead on Appeal

Following a three-and-a-half-hour public hearing yesterday (December 19, 2023) in which dozens of Morongo Basin residents offered testimony that was eloquent, relevant, and compelling County Supervisors in a three/two split decision voted to kill the controversial Flamingo Heights 640 glamping proposal.

Basking in their victory are Caroline Partamian and Justin Merino at the County Government Center in San Bernardino. Partamian organized a Change.org petition which collected more than 6,200 signatures opposing the glamping resort. Merino is president of the Landers Community Association and heads SaveOurDeserts.org. Together they are the de facto nucleus of the grassroots effort to defeat the glamping proposal known as Flamingo Heights 640.

Yesterday (December 19, 2023) was a tough one for RoBott Land Company, developer of the would-be Flamingo Heights 640 glamping site overlooking Pipes Wash. Following the defeat of their appeal, Board Chair Dawn Rowe admonished the applicants for their failure to vigorously engage the community and address their concerns.

As it was, Robott staff turned up at the hearing with a scaled-back version of the project but no one could see around the proposed helipad, potential traffic hazards, noise and light pollution, or the project’s inconsistency with the Countywide Plan and the Homestead Valley Community Plan.

In making the motion to deny the appeal, Rowe asked rhetorically, “Do we want this project? And this community has answered… They don’t want it!”  Rowe’s motion passed with supervisors Jesse Armendarez and Curt Hagman dissenting.
