December’s full moon joins bright-red visible Mars tonight 12/6

The full moon reaches its peak tonight or tomorrow, depending on how late you are staying up. The December full moon is called “The Cold moon” in a nod to the winter season tightening its grip on much of the US. Some other tribal names for December’s full moon are the Frost or Winter moon.

Mars will also be the brightest its been in the last two years. We’re lucky with our dark skies – you’ll be able to spot the steadily-lit orangish-red planet with your naked eye – it will peak over the horizon at sunset in the northeast. Earth will be passing between mars and the sun, meaning this is the closest earth will be to the red planet in two years.
