Camp and Clean event at Giant Rock begins Friday (1/30); Free OHV safety kits and campfire stories, too

Giant Rock is getting its first camp and clean event of 2026. Positional Projects and Blightsites are hosting the event at the famous Landers landmark this Friday and Saturday and are welcoming volunteers who want to help clean up the site and remove the graffiti that continues to make its way onto the split stone.

Activities begin Friday at 2:00 p.m. for the community elephant snot application. That’s the goo that helps dissolve spray paint on the rock’s porous surface. It will sit on the graffiti overnight while campers will gather for stories under the stars in the vortex at 7:00 p.m. Volunteers are welcome to camp overnight.

The graffiti removal and gathering of trash begins Saturday at 9:00 a.m. Lunch is provided for all volunteers at 1:00 p.m. provided in part by $5 Dollar Pizza Place in Landers.

The cleanup weekend is a collaboration of Positional Projects and Blightsites along with the Barstow Bureau of Land Management (BLM), Desert Cleanse Project, the Element Society, High Desert Keepers, the Landers Community Association, Desert Region Fire Safe and Gublers Orchids.

RSVP for any of the free activities here at Eventbrite. The event is suitable for children aged five and up.

Desert Region Fire Safe will support responsible off-road recreation through its Fire Prevention Office, with personnel on-site installing OHV Safety Kits at no cost.

Those kits include fire extinguishers, first aid kits, and chain covers designed to prevent sparks, while sharing best practices for OHV safety and wildfire prevention. This effort is supported through grant funding from the Yamaha Outdoor Access Initiative.

If you can’t make the clean-up but want to support Positional Projects and public land clean-ups, you can donate to them via this link: https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/donation-form/donate-to-make-a-difference-13368
