CALIFORNIANS WILL VOTE ON SEVEN BALLOT MEASURES IN NOVEMBER

One measure seeks to codify the right to access abortion into the state’s Constitution. Abortion in the state is currently tied to privacy rights, and proponents fear that, after the United States Supreme Court’s recent rulings, abortion access could be challenged in state courts. Two measures focus on sports betting at the state’s Native American-operated casinos and horse racing tracks as well as via electronic devices. One measure seeks to ensure that a full 1% of the state’s budget for schools be designated for arts education, and another measure would raise taxes on Californians who earn an annual income of $2 million, creating a fund to combat climate change. Two final measures would potentially ban flavored tobacco products and change regulations for kidney dialysis. Six of these measures were included because of efforts by Californians to gather signatures, and the seventh was added by the state legislature.
