A dangerous stretch of desert highway has gotten a little safer in recent weeks, owing to upped traffic enforcement.
On December 5, the California Highway Patrol Morongo Basin office announced that they would increase enforcement on State Route 247 near Landers and Johnson Valley. Their announcement came as part of a release containing details of a major injury collision on the road, known locally as Old Woman Spring Road. The December collision followed two fatal collisions in the same area during the week of Thanksgiving on that road that left a total of four people and an unborn child dead.
The CHP told Z107.7 that, as of December 14, they have written 91 citations on Old Woman Springs Road since the fatal crash on November 20. Seven additional shifts from the local office have been put in overtime to work specifically in the Landers and Johnson Valley areas, and will continue to patrol the area for the foreseeable future.
The CHP has said that, as of December 14, there have been no crashes on Old Woman Springs Road since they announced the increased enforcement on December 5.
