BLM seeking board members for California Desert District Advisory Council

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) is seeking public nominations for positions on three of its advisory councils – one of those directly affecting hi-desert residents.

The California Desert District Advisory Council (DAC) consists of members who represent stakeholder interests in public land management – such as conservations, ranchers, industry officials, tribal leaders, state and local government officers, academics, and outdoor enthusiasts. The council then provides advice to the BLM on public land issues.

The DAC is one of three advisory councils seeking public nominations for positions on their boards. They are looking for nominations for its Central and Northern advisory councils as well.

The BLM says that these councils are critical in assisting them in continuing to be a good neighbor in communities served by the bureau, providing recommendations on issues such as land use planning, fire management, off-highway vehicle use and recreation.

The federal bureau manages more land than any other federal agency and has advisory councils located across the West. They say that the diverse membership of each council is aimed at achieving the balanced outlook that the BLM needs for its mission, which is to manage public lands for multiple uses.

There are three different categories of the types of people they are seeking – which range from elected public officials to the members of the public at large. Completed and signed applications, letters of reference, and any other information that addresses the nominee’s qualifications must be submitted by August 16.

The BLM has also announced that veteran land manager Joe Stout has been named their new California State Director, where he will oversee 15 million acres of public lands and 42 million acres of minerals and energy resources in California. Stout has a long history of overseeing public lands and forests in California – previously serving as the associate state director of the BLM for 7 years as well as a stint as the forest supervisor of the Eldorado National Forest in the Central Sierras.
