The Big Morongo Preserve will remain closed until further notice so clean-up crews can continue repairing damage from Tropical Storm Hilary, as well as new damage from last Friday’s heavy storm.
Last Friday’s storm, which hit Morongo Valley exceptionally hard with more flooding, was an unfortunate cap to an otherwise productive day. Director of Regional Parks of San Bernardino Beahta Davis made another visit for more site inspections with a number of FEMA representatives, as well as the Urban Conservation Corps who cut more fallen timber on Mesquite Trail.
While a great cap to two weeks progress, crews were back to shoveling mud again on Saturday morning after the previous night’s storm, after the rain washed away the recently improved driveway. “Two steps forward, one step back,” said Kevin Wong, Executive Director of Big Morongo Preserve. “But it is still progress,” he said. “We expect more monsoons in the near future.”
Wong wants to express the Preserve’s gratitude for all the donations they’ve received so far. He said, “Your outpouring of love for the Preserve and your admiration of what we do to steward the Preserve is very evident. It is very apparent that you trust us to maintain this gem in the desert.”
