Easter is coming, and if you have younger peeps in your household they are probably expecting something special in their easter basket this Sunday morning.
It’s true – baby bunnies and chicks are super cute, and are a normal part of spring as nature reminds us that new life can return no matter how long winter can feel. However, those baby animals don’t belong in an Easter basket as a novelty unless you plan on raising them to full-size healthy adults.
The disturbing trend of dying baby chicks bright colors for easter may be a fun instagram photo, but any animal purchased as a novelty supports the breeding of animals for entertainment purposes, and dying an animal these bright colors is a misdemeanor in the state of California – not to mention, cruel.
We are lucky to live in a place where bunnies are abundant – with cottontail and jackrabbits loping around the Mojave desert. And although we don’t have any native wild chickens in the high desert, spotting a roadrunner might do the trick.
Just remember that your children will have a delightful easter with bunny and chicks of the sweeter variety in their easter basket – and you aren’t on the hook for raising and caring for a chick or bunny that will soon grow beyond that cute, tiny state.
