Joshua Tree No Kill Shelter breaks ground on expansion as pet rescue numbers reach critical levels

For nearly 50 years a small building in the middle of a lot near Sunfair dry lake has served as the home to the Joshua Tree No-Kill Shelter (formerly the Morongo Basin Humane Society). It’s the only private shelter in the Morongo Basin that focuses on finding homes for every dog and cat they rescue, and after decades of struggling with space and outdoor facilities, the shelter has broken ground on an expansion that will act as a more comfortable temporary home for pets as they await their…

Having trouble passing smog? A state program may be able to help

Smog used to be a much bigger issue here in California. In the 60’s and 70’s when gas was cheap, big American muscle ruled the streets and cars were sold more on their horsepower than their miles-per-gallon. However, a oil embargo in ‘73 made auto manufacturers put fuel economy first, and it also precipitated the import market makings its way into the American auto industry. The Honda Civic made its domestic debut with the super efficient CVCC engine, which could pull numbers like 30 to 40…

The doors open to Taylor Junction at 6pm, and there will be stacks of northern soul, R&B, mod, motown, garage and psychadelia hitting the platters so you can get out of the desert heat and move…

Structure fire stopped from spreading into Yucca Valley hills; home saved

A detached garage and "conex" storage container are amongst the multiple structures that were on fire at a residence in the 4000 block of Balsa Ave. in Yucca Valley yesterday. Three County Fire units responded to the property fire, which is situated at the bottom of a hill surrounded by open desert. County Fire Division 4 Battalion Chief Travis Aguirre says that a “welding building” was fully-involved in flames when they arrived at the fire around 3 PM on Tuesday, and it had…

Morongo Valley tower on BLM land faces steep opposition from residents as they battle with bureaucracy

The Covington Park Community Room’s air conditioning struggled to keep up with the standing-room only crowd that gathered on Thursday to listen and talk to the Bureau of Land Management. They are considering granting a 30 year lease to InterConnect - a company that builds giant communication towers. The one they are proposing for land in Morongo Valley would nearly 200 feet tall, require solar panels, an access road, fencing, and other not-so-natural developments in the BLM land. This…
