Compound YV is opening a new show this evening (January 28) featuring the work of Yucca Valley-based artist Eric Nash. His dramatic two-dimensional work, which uses oil and charcoal, is inspired by scenes of the California Desert and Los Angeles. The exhibit, titled "Western Lust" opens tonight and will remain up at the gallery until March 26. The kidnapping of a Pioneertown woman was thwarted by the victim’s father last week, and the suspect was later located and arrested. Joshua Tree Retreat Center Recognized as Historic District by National Register

The Joshua Tree Retreat Center has been listed in the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district. Covering 152 acres in Joshua Tree, the retreat center, also known as the Institute of Mentalphysics, was formally recognized as a historic place on January 17. The recognition affords the center, which includes a number of buildings, residences, outdoor scultpures, and even a restaurant, a number of federal and state protections. Sheriff's Deputies are searching for a vandal who launched marbles through the windows of three Twentynine Palms business on Wednesday night (January 18). Alamilla's Taco Shop, Jelly Donut, and 9 Palms Inn, all located on Twentynine Palms Highway, each reported significant damage to windows at their businesses. We have an alert to all book lovers - The Friends of the Joshua Tree Branch Library is holding a book sale tomorrow. Hardcover books will be sold for $1.00, art books will be sold for $2.00, paperback and children’s books will be twenty-five cents each. All proceeds generated from this sale of books will help fund programs at the Joshua Tree Branch Library. A man was arrested for arson after allegedly setting fire to a Twentynine Palms tavern. On Saturday, January 14, at around 10:30 PM security staff at the Virginian Cocktails on Twentynine Palms Highway alerted Sheriff’s Deputies to an incident involving a patron who had been banned from the business.
