Bill McHaney is one of the earliest residents of Twentynine Palms. He was a gold miner, cattleman, and Twentynine Palms homesteader. He has several claims to fame, including being late to his own funeral. Bill McHaney started a cattle ranch with his brothers near Big Bear, then near Thousand Palms, before moving in the 1860s to what is now known as the Desert Queen Ranch in Joshua Tree National Park. Folklore has it that Pioneertown was started by Gene Autry in the 1940s, The Hi-Desert Magazine has a different origin for the town that was built as a movie set for Hollywood westerns. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors had a plan to create a 1.5-acre swimming lake, and a 10-acre fishing and boating lake at the Sunfair Dry lake near Copper Mountain College.
