Tuesday night's Town of Yucca Valley Town Council meeting began with Mayor Rick Denison's "State of the Town" presentation, in which members of the Yucca Valley High School Trojans football team were recognized for their historic season, special recognition was given to public servant retirees, and…

The Tiny Pony…

Yucca Valley holding public hearing over medical marijuana dispensaries on 10/10

In an effort to get ahead of state law, the Town of Yucca Valley will hold a public hearing on Tuesday to address allowing medical marijuana dispensaries within the town. This is not the first time the town has considered allowing dispensaries. California passed Proposition 64 on November 8, 2016, which legalized the use, sale, and cultivation of recreational marijuana for adults over 21 and the medicinal—or by doctor’s recommendation—use of marijuana for anyone over 18. But the following…

Morongo Basin diversity demographics are shifting

Morongo Basin’s population is on the rise and industry diversity is going strong. Found a fledgling bird? Give it time and space.

While spring is known for baby birds, many species nest throughout the summer and even into fall. The baby birds, or “fledglings” once they have feathers, are often found resting on the ground as they learn to fly. While it may appear that the babies are distressed and alone, this is rarely the case. Fledglings spend days on the ground—sometimes as long as two weeks—and their parents are close by. Only seek help if the bird is injured, or perhaps move it to the shade if it appears overheated in…

Hummingbird feeders can cause harm

The Morongo Basin boasts several species of hummingbirds, including year-round residents the Costa’s and the Anna’s. Hummingbirds are valued pollinators, just like bees and bats, but they are omnivorous and are often seen sipping sugar water from backyard birdfeeders. A daily dose of man-made nectar, however, can lead to a raft of health issues, including kidney and liver disease. Instead of sugar water, Conni Chaffin from Feathers n’ Fur Wildlife Rehab Team recommends “giv them real fruit…

Snake season is here: rattlesnakes don’t deserve fear in hi-desert encounters

The snakes are out, indeed, but local hero and snake wrangler, Danielle Wall, explains that these camouflaged predators will do anything to avoid confrontation. If you do see one, or if you hear a rattle: FREEZE, LOCATE, AND BACK AWAY. Don’t run until you have located it. If you need to pass a snake, give it space; and if you can’t get past it, gently toss some water or dirt to scare it away. Note that venomous snakes, especially babies, won’t always have rattles, and, as JTNP Ranger Michael…

Roadrunners are more active, is it ok to feed them?

While many know that feeding coyotes lead to their dependency and untimely deaths, some might wonder if it’s okay to encourage our local roadrunners to stick around by giving them food. Snake season is here, and with it comes a race of roadrunners who eat snakes and other tasty critters. It can be tempting to feed these wild-feathered descendants of the Dodo, but Connie from Feathers and Fur Wildlife Rehabilitation says, “please, don’t: roadrunners especially will become friendly and dependent.”…
