Two additional firefighters have been added to the 29 Palms County Fire Station 44. The firefighter-paramedic and firefighter-EMT will staff a brush patrol capable of advanced lifesaving (ALS) treatment. There will now be five staff members working daily.
Assistant Chief Scott Tuttle said, “Adding this unit increases our firefighting force and adds at least one more paramedic to our daily staffing. This would not be possible without the cooperative efforts of County Fire, Twentynine Palms City Council, City Staff, and the Board of Supervisors.”
A Type VI engine or “Brush Patrol” is a smaller fire apparatus on a Ford F-Series chassis. The smaller size and four-wheel drive capabilities are helpful on small desert roads where a conventional truck would not be able to traverse. The two-unit deployment model will be helpful when two emergencies happen simultaneously, allowing a unit to divert to the additional call. When a structure fire is dispatched, it will also allow Company 44 to have an OSHA Required “2 out” team, allowing firefighters to immediately enter a structure fire. Prior to the additional staffing, an additional unit had to arrive from Joshua Tree or Combat Center FD prior to entering.
