Susan Kearns
Expressionism Off The Grid
Susan lives in an off grid, solar powered cabin in Landers with her husband, Pat Kearns, who is a singer-songwriter and recording engineer. Her textural oil and latex paintings are inspired by desert landscapes and animals. She paints on the floor while Pat mixes songs a few feet away at a table in the corner of their cabin, or outdoors in their open air desert “studio”.
Susan is inspired by feelings and images in her head that arise from listening to music. If you bring your eye close to her paintings, you can see the emotion in the surface texture of the paint. Much like a song, the full story comes together as you take a step back to view the entire scene, rather than focusing on one of the individual instruments.
Anna Stump
Desert Metal
Stump’s “Desert Metal Series” developed from her experiences cleaning up a bone yard and trash dump in Twentynine Palms. In rehabilitating her property, she reuses as much material as possible in her art practice, including piles of metal and tools aged by the harsh climate. She explores themes of skyscapes, desert wildlife, jackrabbit homesteads, and military surveillance, using compositions reminiscent of Christian ascensions. Her background growing up on the US/Mexico Border, another militarized space, has affected how she interacts with her new desert home.
