YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL LAYS DOWN NEW CONDITIONS FOR TLC

The Yucca Valley Town Council unanimously voted at its meeting last night to provide symbolic recognition of the town’s appreciation for local law enforcement by holding a dedication ceremony at the newly renovated Sheriff’s substation, and to paint a blue line in between double yellow lines on the road leading to the Sheriff’s substation. This action came after the town council heard about new hoops Tender Loving Christmas organizers will have to jump through in order to use the town’s community center for the free celebration. Managing editor Tami Roleff said the town will be making some changes in how it allows organizations to use its facilities…
Despite the fact that Mara Cantelo has been putting on Tender Loving Christmas for 33 years—the last 30 at the Yucca Valley Community Center—the Town Council agreed with community services manager Sue Earnest at its meeting last night to require organizations to submit an operational plan when using town facilities. Earnest told the council that last year, the town had to extend the amount of time TLC could use the facilities so the organizers could clean up after the huge Christmas dinner.
“In the future, our preference would be to require a little bit more than just an application and signing a contract. We may ask them for some in-depth information about how they are going to actually execute an event of this size.” She said the application next year may include a supplemental questionnaire prompting them to give the town information it needs.
The council is wielding a big carrot to get Cantelo to comply; the town is waiving its usual fees for using town facilities, which in the case of TLC amounts to more than $13,000.
Saying that Cantelo is an institution who is too valuable to the town to lose, council members urged her to write down TLC’s organizational plans, and they suggested Tender Loving Christmas should meet specific deadlines as set by the town.
The council members urged Cantelo to reach out to churches and service clubs for volunteers to help with the free event.
Cantelo agreed that TLC needs help with volunteers. “We need hundreds of volunteers. We really, really, really, really need people that have food handlers’ cards that can help us cook.” Cantelo added that starting, November 8, TLC will hold meetings for its volunteers every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. in the Ocotillo Room of the Yucca Valley Community Center.
