YUCCA VALLEY TOWN COUNCIL APPROVES 1 PERCENT SALES TAX FOR NOVEMBER BALLOT

080812About four dozen people showed up at last night’s meeting of the Yucca Valley Town Council to give their views on the proposed 1 percent sales tax. Those opposed to the sale tax voiced their concerns about the tax hurting businesses and residents; that the tax would not be used to help pay the costs for poor residents connect to the sewer system; and many argued that 100 percent of the tax should be go toward the sewer project instead of being split up to fund deferred repairs, maintenance, and improvements of roads, parks, and flood control, and cover the increased costs for public safety. Those supporting the tax countered that out-of-town visitors will provide nearly 50 percent of the expected revenue. Yucca Valley resident Lori Herbel got up to speak and reminded the crowd of state sanctions if the sewer plant didn’t get built. “The Town isn’t going to get fined. Hi-Desert Water District isn’t going to get fined. It’s you people who are going to get fined.” In the end, the Council voted 4-0, with Councilman George Huntington, who is on vacation, voting via Skype, to put the sales tax measure on the ballot in the November election, and to set aside $20,000 for public education on the matter. In other business, the Town Council said good-bye to Captain Donnie Miller, who is retiring Friday after 30-plus years with the Sheriff’s department. His unique parting gift is pictured above.
