YUCCA VALLEY MAN REPORTED MISSING FRIDAY FOUND IN TEXAS SATURDAY

A Yucca Valley man who went for a haircut Friday afternoon, only to find the cosmetology school closed, continued driving east, for another 900 miles. Sheriff’s Sergeant Matt Yost said about 3:30 p.m. Friday, Dean Abney, 85, of the 54900 block of Martinez Trail, told his wife he was going to get his hair cut at Elite Cosmetology School in Yucca Valley. Abney did not return home and his wife reported him missing at 6:45 p.m. The Sheriff’s Department searched all night long for Abney, who was driving a beige 2004 Toyota Camry, using helicopters, patrol units, and search and rescue personnel. His name was entered into the missing person’s database. Some 30 hours later, a Texas state trooper found Abney and his car on Interstate 40, about a half hour west of Amarillo, Texas, more than 900 miles from Yucca Valley. The trooper ran Abney’s name and was alerted to the fact that Abney was a missing person from California. The Texas trooper called Abney’s family in Yucca Valley about 11:15 p.m. Saturday night to let them know he had been found. Abney, who takes medication for mild dementia, was taken to a local hospital for observation. Abney’s son flew to Texas Sunday to drive Abney back to Yucca Valley.
