WINTER SAFETY TIPS FROM COUNTY FIRE

Winter weather means you will be using more heat in your house. Reporter Taylor Thacker passes on the winter heating safety tips from the county fire department…
Winter weather is on its way and during this time we like to lay by the fire or crank up our thermostats. However, these heating devices can be dangerous if not used with caution. Here are some tips to keep you safe and warm. Make sure you clean your chimney regularly and have it inspected by a professional every heating season. Be sure to have a proper spark protector on all chimney tops. Store cooled ashes in a tightly sealed metal container. Never use a fireplace when extreme wind conditions exist outside. Never burn trash, paper, or green wood in your fireplace. These materials cause a combustible build-up that can eventually catch fire and cause damage to the chimney and your house. Before cold weather begins, change furnace filters prior to using the heater and check vents periodically to make sure they are not blocked. Remember, charcoal barbecues are intended for outdoors only! They contain deadly amounts of carbon dioxide, so never use a charcoal barbecue to heat up your home! Have a safe and warm winter!
