WILL CANNABIS CULTIVATION, MANUFACTURING BE COMING TO YUCCA VALLEY?

Yesterday the Town of Yucca Valley received a notice of intent from two residents indicating that they planned to circulate a petition to revise the town’s ordinances to allow the cultivation and manufacture of cannabis and cannabis-related products. The proposed ordinance would not allow cannabis stores or dispensaries to operate anywhere within town limits. The proposed ordinance would allow cannabis businesses only in neighborhoods zoned industrial and in the Old Town Industrial/Commercial district. In addition, the ordinance prohibits any signs that reference narcotics or cannabis or paraphernalia, and businesses would not be allowed to keep more than $200 in cash in the business overnight. The petitioners, David Zeigler and Sandra Zeigler, have 180 days to gather the signatures from at least 10 percent of the town’s 10,645 registered voters. If they reach that benchmark, then the Yucca Valley Town Council must either adopt the ordinance or schedule an election for residents to vote on the proposed ordinance. If 15 percent of the town’s voters sign the petition, the Town Council must schedule a special election.
