Event description: Mars and Spiral Galaxies
Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center invites stargazers to tour the desert night sky on Saturday, March 9. This free public event will start around 7:00 pm and last approximately 2 hours. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
Ursa Major, the Big Dipper, is slowly rising as it circles Ursa Minor and the North Star. Many Galaxies can be found in this Constellation. M101 is a face-on spiral galaxy of great beauty 17 million light-years away. Another spiral galaxy – M51 – is 15 million light years away and, typical of most large galaxies, contains billion of stars. Sunset 5:47 pm
Prominent constellations are Taurus (The Bull), Orion (The Hunter), Canis Major (The Large dog), Gemini (The Twins), and Cancer (The Crab).
Volunteers will set up a variety of kinds and sizes of telescopes on the winding sidewalks, and guests are welcome to use them or may bring their own binoculars and scopes as well.
The presentation is very casual, so come at any time and leave when you wish. Bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision. Dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring snacks, water bottles, and chairs.
Please be aware that white headlights severely disturb viewing and use only parking lights as you approach the dome. Let your eyes adjust to the dark before you drive into the parking area.
There are no overnight stays and NO CAMPING anywhere on the Observatory and Nature Center property. No pets, no smoking or alcohol allowed, and visitors must carry out all trash. Adults must accompany and take responsibility for the safety and behavior of children under 16.
The seasonal sky is very unpredictable, and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind. Check @skysthelmit29 or follow @STL29Palms to learn the latest status of an event or call Ray at 760-365-7897.

The STL campus is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
Join Darrell Shade, STL botanist, to discover all the wildflowers, cacti and shrubs growing and blooming at the Nature Center. This is an opportunity to learn about native desert plants. Darrell will tell you all you want to know about local flora and share their common and Latin names.
Winter annuals at the observatory have been growing since the October rain that dumped at least 1½ inches over Joshua Tree National Park and the Morongo Basin. Now they are beginning to bloom.
It can be fun to identify the wildflowers that begin blooming earliest, and then watch as the others come along. Right now, brown-eyed evening primrose, pincushion, coreopsis, dandelion and poppies are prominent. Wallace’s wooly daises, woody bottle washers, forget-me-nots, whispering bells, lacy phacelia and chicory are some of the others. Canterbury bells, desert star, purple mat and silky dalea are other beauties.
Please, no pets or smoking on the campus. STL is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations to support Sky’s The Limit’s educational programs are gratefully accepted.

Saturday, March 16
Event time: 6:30 pm
Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center continues the Full Moon Cultural Series with A Different Look at Our Solar System with Suandra Newberry on Saturday, March 16 at 6:30 pm. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
Mankind has been looking to the stars for guidance since the beginning of time. Suandra will provide a look at the history of Astrology along with how it has been utilized by various cultures throughout the years. She will discuss the various ways Astrology can be used in one’s personal life, and also look at current influences as they relate to the planetary situation we are experiencing.
With more than 35 years of counseling and teaching experience as an expert Astrologer, Suandra understands the rhythms of life and the world around us from an Astrological perspective. She embraces the natal horoscope as an “owner’s manual” that reveals infinite insights into one’s unfolding life journey. Suandra follows the current planetary movement for insights and understanding of the global “state of affairs.”
An anonymous gift makes possible these Full Moon programs, exploring how diverse cultures understand the significance of the desert, earth, and sky. The gatherings take place on Saturdays under the bright desert moon.
Guests are urged to dress for desert winter night weather and bring comfortable camp chairs and water. The campus will open at 5:30 pm to allow time to explore the setting. Parking is limited, so carpooling is encouraged. A suggested donation of $10 per vehicle will help sustain this series.

Mars and Clusters
Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center invites stargazers to tour the desert night sky on Saturday, March 23. This free public event will start around 8:00 pm and last approximately 2 hours. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.
The faint constellation of Cancer is located to the east of Gemini. It is the only constellation whose brightest stars are fainter than a Messier object within its boundaries. M44, called the Beehive cluster, contains many third magnitude stars and is easily seen with the naked eye. It is 515 light-years away. Just below and to the east you will find M67, called the King Cobra Cluster, which is 2,600 light-years distant and one of the oldest open clusters known at 4.5 billion years old. Sunset 6:58 pm.
