UNDERSTANING CHRONIC PAIN CLASS IN WONDER VALLEY

    Event Date: April 4, 2018
    Event Time: 11 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Event Description: Why don’t those medicines work? Understanding Chronic Pain
with Andrea Rubinstein, MD, chief, department of Pain Medicine, Kaiser Permanente, Santa Rosa

Chronic pain is common and millions of people suffer from it. But chronic pain is not just pain that lasts a long time. For a long time we treated chronic pain with the same drugs we used to treat all other pain and yet patients did not get the relief they sought. Far too many people were given drugs such as opioids that actually make pain worse over time. This talk will focus on why chronic pain is different and the risks of treating it like acute pain primarily with opioids. We will also discuss what does work and how to get better.

16th Annual Dessert Soiree & Auction
Event Date: Saturday, April 7, 2018
    Event Time: 6:00 PM

Event Description: Yucca Valley Sunset Rotary’s 16th Annual Dessert Soirée and Auction will be held Saturday, April 7, 2018 at the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Desert, 56525 Little League Drive, Yucca Valley, at 6:00 PM. The event has grown each year, and features the highly-anticipated and locally famous “$1,000 Deal or No Deal” game and Live and Silent Auction Spectacular.

This year’s beneficiary is the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Desert. Their mission is “to inspire and enable all young people of the community, especially those who need us the most, to realize their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens”. Children between the ages of 5-18 receive individual attention with homework, fitness and life skills programs. No child is ever turned away due to an inability to pay – every child has the potential to BE GREAT! Because the Club receives the bulk of its funding support from local contributors, the Dessert Soiree will bring a much-needed financial boost to the Boys & Girls Club of the Hi-Desert.

The Dessert Soiree has a history of being a very popular and fun event. The evening starts with a fabulous selection of hot and cold hors d’oeuvres, fruit and cheese platters and, of course, decadent desserts and champagne. Other beverages are also available at a “no host” bar. The evening continues with a Silent Auction and a special “Wine & Orchid” auction where $200 in cash can be won. The Live Auction will be conducted by Dan Letourneau, who will auction some great items, such as a Holland America cruise for two to either Mexico, Alaska, the Caribbean, or New England/Canada and a “staycation” package for a close-to-home getaway. In the Sunset Rotary Club’s version of the “Deal or No Deal” game, Chris Gubler, Club President, will auction off sponsored briefcases containing money and gifts. Depending on his/her choices, one lucky audience member could win $1,000! The entire audience is involved in this exciting game!

To purchase tickets ($30 each) please call the Boys & Girls Club at (760) 365-5437 or stop by Tease Shirts (behind Denny’s) in Yucca Valley. For more information about the Dessert Soiree visit our website: www.sunsetrotary.org.

SIDEWALK ASTRONOMY AT SKY'S THE LIMIT

SIDEWALK ASTRONOMY AT SKY’S THE LIMIT

Saturday, April 7 at Sky’s The Limit:

Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center invites stargazers to enjoy the desert night sky on Saturday, April 7. This free public event begins at 8:30 pm and will last approximately three hours. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.

Volunteers will set up a variety of kinds and sizes of telescopes on the winding sidewalks, and guests are welcome to use them or may bring their own binoculars and scopes as well.

The winter Milky Way is setting in the west as the spring constellations rise in the east. Some interesting galaxies are featured tonight.

Well placed for viewing are the bright pair known as Bode’s Galaxy and the Cigar Galaxy, the face-on spiral Whirlpool Galaxy, and the edge-on Needle Galaxy. The double stars Mizar in Ursa Major and Algieba in Leo are some of the best in the sky.

Prominent constellations are Auriga (the Charioteer), Gemini (the Twins), Leo (the Lion), Ursa Major (the Great Bear), Virgo (the Maiden), and Boötes (the Herdsman).

The presentation is very casual, so come at any time and leave when you wish. Bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision. Dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring snacks, water bottles, and chairs.

There are no overnight stays and NO CAMPING anywhere on the Observatory and Nature Center property. No pets, no smoking or alcohol allowed, and visitors must carry out all trash. Adults must accompany and take responsibility for the safety and behavior of children under 16.

The seasonal sky is very unpredictable, and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind. Check @skysthelmit29 or follow @STL29Palms to learn the latest status of an event or call Ray at 760-365-7897.

For more information and to see photos taken through STL’s 14” Celestron Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope, visit the STL web site at www.skysthelimit29.org. STL is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations to support Sky’s The Limit’s educational programs are gratefully accepted.
