  • Saturday, July 15 at Sky’s The Limit: Jupiter, Saturn and the Milky Way

    8:45 PM-11:59 PM
    07-15-2017

9697 Utah Trail, 29 Palms, CA, United States

Sky’s The Limit Observatory and Nature Center invites stargazers to enjoy the desert night sky on SaturdayJuly 15This free public event begins at 8:45 pm and ends around midnight. The Observatory is at 9697 Utah Trail in Twentynine Palms, just outside the main (north) entrance to Joshua Tree National Park.

The bright summer Milky Way should be a beautiful sight as it rises above the eastern horizon.

Numerous star clusters and nebulae are visible to the naked eye and resolve into sparking jewels through a telescope. Best of these are the Lagoon Nebula, Trifid Nebula, and Wild Duck Cluster.

Saturn and its glorious rings will offer picturesque detail, and Jupiter will show colorful cloud belts and four moons.

Prominent constellations are Delphinus (the Dolphin), Scorpius (the Scorpion), Aquila (the Eagle), Sagittarius (the Archer), Lyra (the Harp), and Cygnus (the Swan).

Volunteers will set up a variety of kinds and sizes of telescopes on the winding sidewalks, and guests are welcome to use them or may bring their own binoculars and scopes as well. The presentation is very casual, so come at any time and leave when you wish. Bring a red flashlight to preserve night vision.

The campus is always open, so arrive around sunset to allow time to visit other educational attractions before the cosmic tour begins at dark. Dress for unpredictable desert weather and bring snacks, water bottles, and chairs. Children under 16 must be accompanied by adults. No pets, no smoking or alcohol allowed on the STL campus, and visitors must carry out all trash.

The seasonal sky is very unpredictable and a viewing event may have to be delayed, rescheduled, or cancelled due to cloudiness, rain, or excessive wind.  Check Sky’s The Limit Facebook Page or follow @STL29Palms to learn the latest status of an event, or call Steve at (760) 401-3004.

For more information and to see photos taken through STL’s 14” Celestron Schmidt–Cassegrain telescope, visit the STL web site at www.skysthelimit29.org. STL is a tax-exempt nonprofit organization. Donations to support Sky’s The Limit’s educational programs are gratefully accepted.

Important Birds of Ancient Lake Cahuilla and the Salton Sea” presented by Kurt Leuschner, Professor of Natural Resources at College of the Desert

Before the Salton Sea, there was Ancient Lake Cahuilla.   Only hundreds of years ago this giant freshwater lake filled the entire Salton Sink and most of the Coachella Valley.  Birds and people depended on this body of water just like they do today.  In this program, you’ll learn about the special birds associated with this lake that was six times bigger than today’s Salton Sea.

Kurt Leuschner is a Professor of Natural Resources at College of the Desert where he teaches courses on Conservation, Entomology, Field Ornithology, Native Plants, and GPS Navigation.  He has a Bachelor’s degree in Zoology from U.C. Santa Barbara and a Master’s in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Florida.  He is the founder of the Desert Cities Bird Club, on the Board of Directors of Western Field Ornithologists, and is past President of the Natural Science Collaborative.  His most recent publications are the Palms to Pines Birding and Nature Trail map and brochure and a Field Guide to Desert Golf Course Wildlife.  Kurt also teaches weekend courses and workshops on birdwatching, insects, GPS, and backyard habitats for UCR Extension, the Desert Institute, the Desert Studies Center, and the Living Desert. His latest research project involves the sound recording of the various subspecies of Western Scrub-Jay.

Bring your lunch, bring your friends, or just bring yourself to our Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series once a month.  Speakers will present topics of special interest for high desert residents. The lectures start at 12:00 p.m. Admission is $ 5 – Free for Members/Sponsors – beverages will be served.

Reach Out Morongo Basin will benefit from proceeds of a Gospel music festival in September. With three church choirs signed on to take part, organizers are looking for one or two more to fill out the festival and take part in the informal competition. In addition to the Palms Baptist Choir, festivalgoers will hear from the Gospel Fellowship Outreach Worship Center Choir and the Spirit and Truth Worship Center Choir.
