•Who: A small group of individuals are suggesting the MARA Christmas day Tender Loveing Cause be reconstituted this year in memory of Mara Cantelo, and sustainable for future years under the leadership of a rebuild team.

•What:We have scheduled a meeting of a team interested and willing to make a commitment in making the event happen on Christmas day 2017.

•When:The meeting is scheduled for Nov 3rd ,6PM till 730pm

Where: At the Yucca Valley Community Center, Cholla Room.

•Why: In the past thirty years Mara Cantelo made it possible for those less fortunate to celebrate the Christmas holiday by providing a holiday meal, with toys/Santa for children and togetherness at a lonely time of the year.

•How: This meeting will determine if there is interest, and commitment to providing contributions, food, toys etc.… It is a huge project and it will take many volunteers to make it a success. If you are interested and wish to volunteer your service, time and funds, please come to the meeting. The forming group is asking all in the non-profit community organizations to participate in this once a year event. We are asking local restaurants to participate in the event.

The Morongo Basin Conservation Association (MBCA) will host a Desert-Wise Living program Saturday November 4th, 2017 from 9:30-12pm. In 2017 the DWL Series remains focused on the critical issues of energy and water consumption as they relate to our community’s role in local conservation and our impact on a renewable energy future. Presentations will focus on California's Zero Net Energy Residential Building program. In this 2.5-hour program, Ron Kliewer and Will Vincent from Southern California Edison will team up to introduce us to the Zero Net Energy policy and how it is applied. The policy generates changes that improve energy efficiency in our buildings, reducing our energy use and saving us money. Ron is uniquely qualified to share building perspectives about ZNE. Beginning as a carpenter, then becoming a licensed general contractor and a building science consultant, he acquired credentials critical to understanding energy efficiency. He is certified in thermography and building analysis. He has built research homes for Bonneville Power Administration and others. In this capacity, he has worked closely with nationally recognized design firms, builders, research entities and investor-owned utilities. Currently, he is a member of Southern California Edison's (SCE) Energy Codes & Standards team, where he leads ZNE planning and coordination activities company-wide. Will has accepted invitations to speak on topics in building science at ASHRAE, USGBC, AEE, IBPSA, the White House and several universities.Local solar contractors, the Town of Yucca Valley Town, and others will have exhibits and be available with answers to what steps and incentives are available for individual home owners. The Program will be held at the Yucca Valley Senior Center, 57088 Twentynine Palms Highway, Yucca Valley, CA 92284 from 9:30-noon, doors open at 9:15am. Event Name: Art Exhibition – Opening Reception
    Event Date: November 4, 2017
    Event Time: 5:00pm – 7:00pm

Event Description: The 29 Palms Art Gallery is hosting Ingrained, a solo exhibition by contemporary painter Paula Izydorek in the main gallery; (on view concurrently with landscape photographer Doug Dolde in the west gallery.) Izydorek’s acrylic on wood panel paintings address how submersion in the surrounding environment affects ones biochemistry, interpersonal conflicts and overall wellbeing. The opening reception will be held Saturday, November 4, 2017, from 5pm to 7pm. Free and open to the public.

    Ingrained will be on view November 2 – 26, 2017; Thursday to Sunday 11:00 – 3:00pm.

“Through painting I examine and attempt to resolve personal yet universal conflicts; such as the subconscious yearning for self worth,” explains artist Paula Izydorek “and during my process based narrative, I collaborate with the naturally occurring wood grain.”

Unlike the typical wood grain based abstractions, Izydorek’s compositions show diversity and tell unexpected stories by revealing identifiable forms intersecting with raw underlying emotions in a vibrant setting.

    Event Time: 12:00 – 1:00 p.m.

Event Description: Brown Bag Lunch Lecture – November 16, 2017

    “A Visit with John Muir”
    presented by Frank Helling

To John Muir life was a grand adventure! Geologist. botanist, explorer, adventurer, writer, philosopher, preservationist and political activist, John Muir lived life to its fullest. His ideas and ideals have never been more relevant than they are today. Frank Helling brings the great mountaineer to life in his performances.

An active adventurer and naturalist himself, Frank has devoted much of his life to ‘sauntering’ in Muir’s footsteps. He has back-packed, hiked and climbed in the Sierras, Rockies, Cascades, Alps, Alaska, Hawaii and the deserts of the American Southwest. He has worked as a ranger/naturalist in Kings Canyon Natural Park and a professional wilderness instructor. As an environmental activist, Frank has served as program chair, conservation chair, environmental education chair and on the executive committee for the Tehipite Chapter of the Sierra Club. Frank has performed for schools, universities, environmental and civic groups, in the National Parks and for special events throughout California.

Bring your lunch, bring your friends, or just bring yourself to our Brown Bag Lunch Lecture Series once a month. Speakers will present topics of special interest for high desert residents. The lectures start at 12:00 p.m. Admission is $ 5 or free for Museum Members/Sponsors. Beverages will be served.

  • EMPTY BOWLS BENEFIT FOR REACH OUT FOOD BANK

    3:45 PM-7:00 PM
    11-19-2017

    Empty Bowls Event

on November 19th 2017 in Yucca Valley, Ca

What:  Empty Bowls Benefit for Reach Out Morongo Basin food bank program

Who:  Organized by Clay Folk Potters’ Guild;  Presented by Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council; Hosted by Healthy Generations; Made Possible by Community Members of the Morongo Basin (additional local artists, soup makers, bread bakers and other volunteers)

When:  Sunday, November 19th from 4-7pm (line tokens handed out starting at 3:45 – first come, first pick of a bowl)

Where:  Healthy Generations, Yucca Valley, Ca

Why:  Raise much needed funds for the local food banks run by Community Food Pantry of the Morongo Basin and the 29 Palm Community Food Pantry.   Since everything for the event is donated, 100% of proceeds go directly to the purchase of food for those in need locally.

How:  Hot, delicious homemade soups and breads served in a handmade bowl of your choice.  The bowl goes home with you; your $20 donation goes directly to the local food banks.  First come, first served starting at 4pm (line tokens handed out at 3:45).  Cash and charge donations will be accepted at the door.

The last Empty Bowls event in Joshua Tree … our second event at Red Arrow Gallery, in 2012 raised $2,108 for the American Food Bank.   All the beautiful bowls had found new owners 20 minutes after the doors opened!   Just as important, much good will was created in the community — everyone giving AND receiving so much.  Awareness was raised about our local food banks and how they serve those in need in our community, which is an important aspect of the event.

About Empty Bowls (from the international website):

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots effort to fight hunger and was created by The Imagine Render Group. The basic premise is simple: Potters and other craftspeople, educators and others work with the community to create handcrafted bowls. Guests are invited to a simple meal of soup and bread. In exchange for a cash donation, guests are asked to keep a bowl as a reminder of all the empty bowls in the world. The money raised is donated to an organization working to end hunger and food insecurity.

It is the collective genius of all the people involved that has made Empty Bowls what it has become. Events have now taken place across the United States and in at least a dozen other countries. Many millions of dollars have been raised and donated to hunger-fighting organizations. We could never have imagined all the things people have done or all the ways the project has touched people.

The Morongo Basin Cultural Arts Council, and Clay Folk of the Morongo Basin are putting on an Empty Bowls Event at Healthy Generations on November 19, from 4-7.   Please add this event to your calendar.
