WHAT’S GOING ON TODAY AND TOMORROW AT KING OF THE HAMMERS

In King of the Hammers off-road events in Johnson Valley’s off-road area today, it’s the Shootout. This event is as entertaining to watch as the King of the Hammers main event itself and may be why so many people show up early to Hammertown. Rigs ranging from homebuilt rock crawlers to southern rock bouncers to SRRS compete for the fastest time up a huge vertical ledge. It’s the King of the Hammers’ version of drag racing. There will be stadium lights and announcers with thousands of people lining each side of the course, cheering and heckling the drivers. The race starts at 6 p.m.
At King of Hammers tomorrow (Tuesday, February 6, 2018), drivers will have a last chance to qualify for the big race. There are a variety of ways to qualify for the King of the Hammers race, including past performance at the event and at Ultra4 sanctioned races throughout the season. But for others, there’s the Last Chance Qualifier, a race that’s a short course near Hammertown that contains all of the elements of King of the Hammers, just in a bite-sized package. Two racers—Loren Healy and Randy Slawson—have won King of the Hammers in the past after earning their spot through the Last Chance Qualifier. Racers to watch are Jason Scherer, John Currie, Rick Waterbury, Jordan Townsend, and Mike Bergman.
