WHAT TO EXPECT IF YOU DON’T SHOW FOR JURY DUTY

What happens if you don’t answer the call to jury duty? Reporter Dan Stork asked and found out…
Recently, I answered a jury duty summons. The trial for which a jury was to have been selected was continued, so everyone in the jury pool for that day was excused. But the presiding judge, Rod Cortez, told us that those people who hadn’t responded to their notices would be called to account. We asked Christina Volker, the Chief Executive Officer for San Bernardino County Superior Court, what might happen to them. She said that within 2 or 3 weeks of the initial failure to appear, an “order to show cause” would be sent by certified mail to such citizens. Going by past experience, about 90 percent of delinquents respond to this mail, and are re-scheduled. For those who haven’t responded, bench warrants may be issued. What happens then is up to the judges—some might impose a fine, perhaps around $100, perhaps forgiven if jury service is completed. Whatever the course of events, it’s better to take care of this citizen’s duty the first time around.
