WE REVIEW ST. JOSEPH’S PLAYERS “A FEW GOOD MEN” IN YUCCA VALLEY

The St. Joseph’s Players community theater of Yucca Valley had its opening night gala for “A Few Good Men” last Friday. The Aaron Sorkin play—later made into an Oscar-nominated film starring Tom Cruise—revolves around the court-martial of two U.S. Marines charged with the murder of a fellow soldier. Reporter David Haldane was there and offers this review…

It’s a murder mystery/courtroom drama. You know from the outset exactly who did it. Who’s responsible remains to be seen.

I’m talking about “A Few Good Men,” the masterful drama made into a movie by the same name. Now director Rebecca Havely, of Z1077, has done a masterful job herself of bringing it to Yucca Valley. Ben Bees shines in the role of Lt. Daniel A. Kaffee, the cynical Navy lawyer forced into defending what’s right. Abe Daniels crackles as Col. Nathan Jessup, the base commander who ends up cracking himself. And Cyrus Short is nothing short of terrifying as Lt. Jonathan James Kendrick, the fist-clenched marine straight out of a non-com’s nightmare.

It’s all held together by crisp military uniforms on cadence-chanting recruits literally sprinting between scenes. Bottom line: an invigorating way to spend an evening.

“A Few Good Men,” staged at St. Joseph of Arimathea Episcopal Church in Yucca Valley, runs all four Saturday evenings in March at 7 p.m. and the last three Sundays at 2:30 pm. Regular tickets are $11, or $9 for seniors, military and students. For reservations, call 760-362-9319.
